To prevent damage to your irrigation ~ sprinkler system it is important to winterize it for cold weather.  Compressed air is used to “blowout” the water that is remaining in the irrigation lines.  If water is left in the lines it will freeze and cause damage to the system.  Avoid costly future repairs with a little maintenance now.

The process is fairly simple… After turning off the water source inside, a portable air compressor is hooked up to the irrigation system.  Each zone is turned on one at a time.  The air forces any remaining water out of the lines.  It is good to run through the zones a second time completely remove all the water.  Always wear eye protection when blowing out an irrigation system.

Make sure the back flow preventer is free of water.  The water lines that feed the irrigation system inside the house need to drained.  This is a good time to turn off all other outdoor water sources on the house.  Don’t forget to turn the irrigation controller to the off position.
